Sajja Chandramouli was an Indian doctor, politician, and leader of the Handloom movement. He served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Chirala Assembly constituency, Andhra Pradesh, representing the Janata Party (1981–1983) and later the Telugu Desam Party (1985–1989). Born in Vetapalem, Bapatla district.
"Medical career" 🩺 : Chandramouli studied at Andhra Christian College, Guntur, and earned his MBBS from Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam in 1950, where he won a Gold Medal in Human Physiology. He completed his House Surgeonship in 1951 and began his career at Evangelical Booth Mission Hospital. In 1952, he founded Naagaratnam Hospital in Ponnur, becoming renowned as an expert in abdominal surgery. In 1951, Chandramouli completed his House Surgeonship and began his medical practice at the Evangelical Booth Mission Hospital. In 1952, he established his own hospital at Ponnur, naming it Naagaratnam Hospital in memory of his sister. He gained recognition as an expert in abdominal surgery and practiced medicine with dedication for many years.
"Political career" : Chandramouli entered politics in 1972, contesting as an Independent candidate from the Chirala Assembly constituency, where he lost by a narrow margin of 154 votes. In 1978, he contested again as a Janata Party candidate, losing by 598 votes. He was elected as a Janata Party MLA in the 1981 by-election from Chirala and served until 1983. Later, he joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and was elected again as an MLA, serving from 1985 to 1989. He was a notable leader of the Handloom movement, working for the welfare of weavers and their communities.
Sajja Chandramouli is remembered for his dual contributions as a medical professional and a political leader, especially for his service to the handloom community, his commitment to public welfare, and his excellence in abdominal surgery.
